Minister

Dr Byron Camilleri is a Maltese politician and lawyer currently serving as Minister for Education and Sport. His career in public service began in 2010 when he was elected the youngest-ever mayor of Fgura, a role in which he distinguished himself through effective local governance and community engagement. His success at the local level led to his election to Parliament in 2017.
Following his election to the House of Representatives, Dr Camilleri was appointed Government Whip, in which role he was entrusted with managing parliamentary affairs and supporting the Government’s legislative agenda. Dr Camilleri is well known for his knowledge of parliamentary affairs, and to date he also serves on the House Business Committee.
In January 2020, he was appointed Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement, taking on responsibility for some of the country’s most critical institutions, including the police force, civil protection, defence and correctional services.
After the 2022 general election, Dr Camilleri was reconfirmed as Minister by Prime Minister Robert Abela and assigned an expanded portfolio as Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality. In this capacity, he was responsible not only for national security and law enforcement but also for driving major reforms and for promoting equality, civil liberties and the rights of minority groups.
In 2024, Dr Camilleri was entrusted with a revised and broadened remit as Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment. This portfolio reflected a strategic realignment of national priorities and placed him at the helm of a wide range of areas and reforms.
Dr Camilleri was re-elected to Parliament in the 2026 general election, part of the Labour Party’s fourth consecutive general election victory. Following his re-election, he was appointed Minister for one of the main sectors identified as pillars of Vision 2050. In fact, he was appointed Minister for Education and Sport and also remained responsible for citizenship.
A lawyer by profession, Dr Camilleri graduated as Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 2012 and was admitted to the bar in 2013.
