Alternative Learning Programme for fifth formers - “A life-changing experience”

Reference Number: PR142124 , Press Release Issue Date: Sep 23, 2014

Over 260 students, who successfully completed the Alternative Learning Programme (ALP), were awarded a certificate during an awards ceremony at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.

During the previous scholastic year, the ALP was introduced with the aim of reaching out to fifth form students who did not apply for at least one SEC exam, and started in January 2014. This scholastic year’s ALP programme has been expanded and will start earlier, in September. This is part of Government’s policy to strengthen vocational education to decrease the number of early school leavers.

Students follow training in various areas such as IT, mathematics, life skills and languages, among many other subjects. The level of training, depending on the programme, is Level 1 and 2.

During the ceremony, Minister for Education and Employment Evarist Bartolo wished well those who took part in the ALP. He said he was pleased to see that many students will continue their studies and thanked the educators who helped make this programme a success. He also thanked the parents of these youths for their continuous support during the programme.

The youths in this ceremony took part in the Youth.Inc branch of the Alternative Learning Programme. Some of them were asked to relate their experience of the programme and said that they were happy to have something different, that it is a life-changing experience away from the traditional schooling environment and something that accommodates their needs.
