CELEBRATING MULTILINGUALISM IN MALTESE SCHOOLS

On the 13th of March, parents and education officials were invited to attend the concert set up by the Migrant Learners’ Unit to remember International Mother Language Day. The day is celebrated by the United Nations on the 21st of February to help us remember the importance of preserving our linguistic and cultural heritage.
Over 120 newcomer learners who are currently following the induction course at the Maria Regina Naxxar hub and Saint Clare College San Gwann hub took part in the concert. Learners coming from over 20 different countries (Albania, Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Egypt, Hungary, India, Italy, Libya, Macedonia, Lithuania, Moldova, The Philippines, Portugal & Brazil, Romania, Spain, Serbia, Syria, Turkey and Ukraine) spoke about their country of origin, sang national anthems and popular songs and nursery rhymes in their own mother tongue.
A big thank you goes to the team of professional and dedicated teachers at the Migrant Learners’ Unit, Naxxar and San Gwann hubs, for their hard work in setting up such an entertaining programme.
Languages transmit cultures, values and traditional knowledge hence the importance of treating diversity and multilingualism in our schools as a valuable resource.

CELEBRATING FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN HIGHER EDUCATION

A positive approach to foreign languages in all learning contexts is of vital importance both for improving business performance as well as the employment prospects of students. Foreign language proficiency and cultural awareness should be an integral part of an individual’s skills profile in order to avail of growing internationally orientated employment opportunities.
Foreign languages were celebrated during a Language Day which was held at the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary in Naxxar on the 5th of December. The aim of the event was to promote foreign languages in higher education and to offer students the possibility to visit the school and get a taste of what it can offer in relation to foreign languages. Over 400 form 4 students coming from state, independent and church schools from all over Malta attended to the event. Mr Mark Vella from the European Commission and Dr Mario Pace from the University of Malta explained why it is useful to learn foreign languages and how to benefit from the opportunities they provide. A number of students from the school gave exceptional performances when singing in different languages. The event was presented by Dr Phyllisienne Vassallo Gauci and Mr Ronald Borg.
The lecturing staff and guidance team at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary illustrated the possibilities available to students to pursue their studies in languages in higher education. A number of language stands where set up and visiting students could gather information and ask questions. Participating students and their accompanying teachers also took part in a language treasure hunt which took place on the vast school grounds. Language students at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary gave a helping hand in the smooth running of the activity.
Distinguished guests from the French and Spanish embassies were present.

THE LABYRINTH - PUBLIC LECTURE ORGANISED BY THE MALTA CLASSICS ASSOCIATION

The Labyrinth is a popular and central feature of Greek and Roman mythology yet the myth often overshadows a more fundamental aspect. From the rites of passage of archaic communities to the use by Medieval Christian communities of the labyrinth as a metaphor for our inner psychic core, the Labyrinth has come to stand for much. Prof Schoonhoven, former assistant-professor of Latin and Greek at the State University of Groningen in the Netherlands, will be discussing precisely this in his upcoming public lecture.
