Interesting facts about the German language

German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union. It is spoken by 120 million people in Europe.

Germany is located in central Europe and borders nine countries Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. German is furthermore the official language of Austria and Liechtenstein.

Germany is the biggest economy in Europe and the third largest in the world. As noted by the Goethe Institute, an institution set up to promote the learning and culture of German around the world, knowledge of German is beneficial for global business connections and increases job opportunities with German and foreign companies. Knowledge of the language is central for effective communication and to build stronger relations with German business partners.

German is furthermore central in the field of tourism and in the hospitality industry due to the influx of tourists from German-speaking countries who are avid travellers and are noted as the world’s biggest spenders when on holiday. The need for German-speaking staff continues to grow both in Malta and around the world.

Germany is the third largest contributor to research and development and offers various research fellowships to scientists from abroad.  For those interested in the literature and the arts, German is the language of Goethe, Kafka, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven.  18% of all books published worldwide are in German. The book fair in Frankfurt is one of the most sought after fairs of the book industry. As noted on the website for 2016, ‘7,100 exhibitors from over 100 countries; around 270,000 visitors and over 9,300 journalists and blogger’ will be present this year.
