Let's Debate Quality Education - Educational Debate for Secondary Students
This activity was part of the campaign "Unite for Quality Education" which was organised in 2014 by Education International (EI).  This was based on the three pillars of quality education, namely: quality teachers, quality tools and quality environments.  This activity formed part of an on-going consultation process to improve and bring more quality in Education.
The Malta Union of Teachers, through the Ministry for Education and Employment, teamed up with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, the DES and the DQSE to hold a series of debates to encourage young people to discuss issues related to quality education.  Schools were invited to take part by sending a team of three speakers.  Each school had the possibility of opting to have another one or two groups as Reserve Teams.
During the activity the students debated specific topics related to education from different angles ('for', 'against' or 'neutral').  The audience (composed of the students from the same class/es) voted before, during and after each topic for discussion to assess how and if they had changed their opinion because of what they heard during the debate.  The teams could present their arguments either n Maltese or in English.
The chosen topics were the following:
  • L-edukazzjoni mill-familja hija aktar importanti minn dik tal-iskola.
  • L-edukazzjoni obbligatorja għandha ssir sa 18-il-sena għal kulħadd.
  • Id-dixxiplina tgħin jew ixxekkel l-imħabba lejn it-tagħlim?
  • L-għalliem għandu jkun ħabib jew edukatur?
  • L-eżamijiet huma l-iktar ħaġa importanti fl-iskola?
  • Ix-xogħol tad-dar għandu jitneħħa u jsir fil-ħin tal-iskola stess.
  • Il-lezzjonijiet kollha għandhom isiru bil-Malti.
  • Skejjel co-ed (bis-subien u bniet fl-istess skola) huma aħjar għall-edukazzjoni tagħna.

Eleven schools participated in this activity whihc was open to all secondary schools in Malta and Gozo.  The participants were mainly Year 9 (Form 3) students.

In December 2013, H.E The Archbishop concelebrated mass while the event was presided over by the H.E. The President of Malta, Dr George Abela.
