Mission Statement

“Services intended to assist people at any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational decisions and to manage their careers” Career Guidance and Public Policy: Bridging the Gap. OECD (2004:19)


Objectives

The provision of Career Guidance that addresses the needs, aspirations and abilities of the individual learner within the context of a continually evolving and globalised economic scenario, focusing on the development of a holistic, lifelong and life-wide process.

  • ​provide career guidance programmes targeting primary, middle and secondary school learners which aim to promote effective learning and high educational attainment and further the personal development of learners;
  • provide career guidance to learners through individual, group or class sessions;
  • help learners make appropriate career decisions by providing information and advice on available education and training opportunities;
  • help learners acquire the necessary skills and competences relating to CV writing, interview skills and other career path finding strategies;
  • organise career orientation visits to workplaces and post-secondary institutions according to the learners’ interests;
  • prepare learners for the place of work, co-ordinate and organise the career exposure experience;
  • help learners in the different transition phases, in particular from primary to middle school and from secondary to post-secondary education;
  • organise several career guidance events during the year which involve learners, parents/guardians and other stakeholders. Link

The Explore more project and Web portal

As part of the implementation of My Journey (http://www.myjourney.edu.mt/), a new career guidance platform (http://www.exploremoreproject.eu​ was launched in December 2018. This interactive platform aims to facilitate career choices for secondary school learners. During their secondary education, learners need to choose a number of subjects to focus their studies on and which will pave the way for their professional choices later on in life. The information is presented in an interactive way so that learners interact with the information. Language which is age appropriate is in Maltese and English. Through focused research, all available information was channelled to one platform and includes a series of job profiles, videos portraying ‘a day in the life of’, giving learners a better idea of what the job they are aspiring for is all about and a quiz to help learners explore their preferred learning path and preferred subject choices.


Reflective booklet

NSSS has also worked on the development of a Career Exposure: Student’s Reflective Logbook which can be downloaded from here​.


The logbook is a fill-in handbook which aims to prepare learners before embarking on the experience, guides them through the experience and helps them to reflect upon the knowledge/impressions that they gain form it.


Co-ordination of the Euroguidance Project, webportal, facebook page and bi-annual newsletter

NSSS is also responsible for managing and co-ordinating activities outlined in the Euroguidance Grant Agreement. This is an Erasmus + funded project with the following aims:

  • ​​​support the development of the European dimension of lifelong guidance within national guidance systems through strategic cooperation with relevant national and EU authorities, services and networks, as well as through information sharing, peer learning and facilitating international exchange and cooperation in the area of lifelong guidance;
  • support competence development of guidance practitioners and raise their knowledge and awareness on the value of international mobility for career management and skills development;
  • This is supported through training and other learning opportunities as well as strategic dissemination and communication approaches;
  • Information provision and communication on:

              1. Information and tools to support mobility in Europe, including guidance services, moving to a country, exchange and grants, recognition of qualifications and learning opportunities.
              2. Tthe role and function of the Euroguidance network and centres
              3. Relevant EU policy developments and initiatives
              4. Results of EU funded projects, events, peer learning activities and network activities
              5.
